Gradual Return to Work

For many people, it is helpful to be able to begin the return to work by working less than a full schedule, such as:

  • Working fewer hours a day.
  • Working fewer days per week.

For example, we often encourage people to return to work starting at 4 hours/day for the first week, then 6 hours/day the second week, followed by 8 hours by the third week.  You can stay with this schedule if prescribed by your doctor.

A gradual return to work allows people to improve their stamina, problem-solve accommodations they need, participate in ongoing therapies, etc.  A graduated return-to-work may also allow you to return to work earlier than if you had to work a full-time schedule. Working is an important part of your rehabilitation and can help in your recovery.
